Absolutely not. We have a strong relationship with the school and hope it continues into the future.

Is it really possible to find land in Dun Laoghaire or Rathdown?

Yes. A couple of potential sites have already been identified that could work if the funds were available.

What happens to my donation?

Donations go into a separate account for the development fund and cannot be used for day to day club funding.

If I buy tickets to a fundraising event, what happens to my funds?

Events have associated costs. Net gains from events primarily support the development fund, with a portion supporting Monkstown HC day to day funding for that fiscal year.

What are your initial goals and longer term goals?

The initial target is to raise €1M as soon as possible. The overall goal is €3M.

Future Vision | Monkstown Hockey Club Development Fund

As Monkstown Hockey Club looks to the future, it does so from a position of strength, scale, and ambition — but also with a clear challenge to overcome. Despite having a great partnership with Rathdown School and access to their fantastic facilities, Monkstown does not own a home of its own. Indeed, there is no independent turf hockey pitch in all of Dun Laoire area that is not on school land.. This is a reality that affects players, families, and volunteers alike, and one that must be addressed to secure the club’s long-term future and the sport in our area.

The Monkstown Hockey Club Development Fund was created to meet this challenge head-on. Its sole purpose is to raise the funds required to acquire land and, ultimately, to develop a dedicated pitch and clubhouse for Monkstown Hockey Club. This is not about short-term fixes, but about building a lasting home that will serve generations of hockey players in Dun Laoghaire.

A permanent home would transform every aspect of club life. It would provide consistent, high-quality facilities for matches and training, a central hub for the academy and youth sections, and a welcoming clubhouse where members can gather, celebrate, and build community. It would also allow Monkstown to continue expanding its inclusive programmes, from the Strikers initiative to veterans’ hockey, ensuring that everyone has a place within the club.

The Development Fund operates under the umbrella of the Monkstown Hockey Club Executive Committee but is managed by a dedicated group focused entirely on this long-term goal. Crucially, all donations made to the Development Fund remain within the fund and are not used for the day-to-day running of the club. Every contribution is an investment in Monkstown’s future.

Looking ahead, Monkstown’s vision is clear: to remain a leader in Irish hockey, to continue producing players of the highest calibre, and to offer a welcoming, inclusive environment for all who want to be part of the game. With a permanent home, the club can strengthen its academy, support elite performance, and deepen its roots within the local community.

From a meeting in a hotel room in 1894 to a thriving, modern club with nearly 1,000 members, the journey has been shaped by those who believed in what Monkstown could be. The Development Fund represents the next chapter in that story — a collective effort to ensure that Monkstown Hockey Club not only endures, but thrives, for the next 130 years and beyond.
